What China's official L-visa guidance says about flights
The current Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa instructions describe the L visa as the category for tourism. For supporting documents, they list itinerary evidence such as round-trip air ticket booking records and hotel reservations, or an invitation letter issued by an entity or individual in China.
The official wording is about a booking record / itinerary document. It does not create a universal rule that every tourist applicant must first buy a non-refundable final airfare. Your local Chinese mission or visa centre can still publish more specific instructions.
There are two common documentary paths for a tourist application
Self-planned tourism
- Round-trip air ticket booking record / itinerary evidence.
- Hotel reservation covering the relevant stay.
- Travel dates and cities that are consistent with the visa form.
- Other basic application documents required by the local centre.
Tourism by invitation
- Invitation letter from an entity or individual in China.
- Applicant details such as name, gender and date of birth.
- Arrival/departure dates and places to be visited.
- Inviter identity/contact information and required signature or seal.
Local centres can specify how the invitation path interacts with flight or accommodation evidence. Do not assume an invitation removes every other document requirement in every country.
What a useful flight reservation should get right
The points below are practical consistency checks, not a substitute for the official checklist. They are designed to reduce the most common problems with temporary or third-party reservations.
FlightVerified's position is to use legitimate reservation evidence, disclose validity limitations, and never present a generated PDF as if it were a real airline reservation.
Your passport is only one part of the China visa requirement
Chinese visa instructions also tell applicants to follow the embassy, consulate or visa centre handling their case. If you apply outside your country of citizenship, proof of legal stay or residence in the application country can be required.
Use the Chinese mission / visa centre serving your consular area and its current L-visa checklist.
Check whether the local centre accepts your status there and what residence, work, student or other legal-stay evidence it requires.
If you are applying for a China L visa in Singapore
The Singapore Chinese Visa Application Service Center currently lists a passport with at least six months' remaining validity and two blank visa pages, a recent compliant photo, and—where the applicant is not a Singapore citizen—proof of legal stay or residence status in Singapore. For tourism, the checklist lists a round-trip flight booking and hotel reservation in the applicant's name, or the qualifying invitation route.
The Singapore visa centre's current application guide says that, through 31 December 2026, applicants for one- or two-entry short-term visas staying under 180 days are exempt from fingerprint collection. Other exemptions and case-specific requests also exist, so confirm the current notice when you apply.
Do not arrange a short-lived reservation too early
Application timing matters because temporary bookings can expire. The right timing depends on the centre handling your application and the service used to create the reservation.
Use L for tourism only when that matches your purpose, then read the local checklist.
Align flights, hotels, itinerary and form dates before online submission.
Some centres review uploaded documents before accepting the passport and final submission.
Follow the centre's instructions for in-person submission, fingerprints if applicable, and payment.
Check name, passport number, entries, validity and duration of stay before travel.
Plan at least a month ahead.
The Singapore centre currently recommends beginning at least one month in advance, but no earlier than three months before travel.
- Online review
- Typically at least 5–15 working days, or longer
- Regular after centre submission
- Collection on the 4th working day
- Express
- Collection on the 3rd working day
- Urgent
- Collection on the 2nd working day
Common flight-itinerary mistakes worth checking
Name mismatch: booking uses a nickname, omitted surname or different transliteration from the passport.
Date mismatch: the flight dates conflict with the visa form, hotel booking, leave letter or travel plan.
Wrong documentary path: relying on an invitation letter but ignoring the exact local centre's supporting-document instructions.
Applying from the wrong jurisdiction: not checking whether the centre accepts your legal status in the country of application.
Reservation expires too soon: the booking disappears before the application is likely to be reviewed.
Fabricated evidence: using a document that looks like an itinerary but has no legitimate reservation basis.
China visa flight-reservation FAQ
Do I need to buy a fully paid airline ticket before applying for a China tourist visa?
China's current L-visa guidance refers to round-trip air ticket booking records or similar itinerary documents, not a universal requirement to purchase a non-refundable final airfare. Always follow the exact checklist of the Chinese mission or visa centre handling your application, because local requirements can differ.
Can an invitation letter replace the flight and hotel documents?
For an L tourist visa, current Chinese consular guidance provides an alternative route using an invitation letter from an entity or individual in China. The invitation must contain specified applicant, itinerary and inviter information. Some local centres may still ask for additional supporting evidence, so check the local checklist.
What if I apply for the China visa in a country where I am not a citizen?
Chinese visa instructions can require proof that you are legally staying or residing in the country where you apply. The exact acceptable document depends on the local mission or visa centre. For example, Singapore's current L-visa checklist asks non-Singapore citizens for evidence entitling them to stay or reside there.
How long should my flight reservation remain valid?
There is no single worldwide China-visa rule stating one fixed reservation-validity period. The practical objective is that the booking remains coherent and usable while the application is being reviewed. If a temporary reservation may expire quickly, understand the expiry before relying on it and follow any specific instruction from your application centre.
Can I submit a PDF itinerary that has no real reservation behind it?
That is not a good approach. FlightVerified is designed around legitimate booking or reservation records and transparent validity. A fabricated document can create inconsistencies and may expose the applicant to serious visa consequences.
Does a flight booking guarantee the China visa will be issued?
No. A flight booking is only one supporting document where requested. Consular officers may ask for more information, request an interview, and decide whether to issue the visa, its validity, permitted stay and number of entries.
Check whether the reservation requirement actually applies to you.
Passport nationality, passport type, application country, local status, travel purpose and date can all change the answer.
